Il Liber de virtutibus herbarum è un trattato sui segni zodiacali e i sette pianeti associati a piante medicinali, definito da Jonathan Smith "uno dei testi più preziosi per la comprensione della vita religiosa nella Tarda Antichità".

Il testo originale greco presenta due recensioni: nella prima (conservata in un manoscritto copiato nel 1474 da Kostantinos Laskaris) è il medico Tessalo che riceve una rivelazione del dio Asclepio dopo un periodo di rigoroso ascetismo; la seconda è attribuita ad Ermete Trismegisto che si rivela ad Asclepio.

L'attribuzione a Tessalo - il famoso medico greco vissuto sotto il regno di Nerone - fu stabilita da Franz Cumont sulla base di un confronto tra il manoscritto greco Madrid (Codex Martitensis Bibl. nat. 4631, ff. 75r-79v) e quello latino Montpellier, ma questa datazione è stata più volte confutata.

David Pingree ha suggerito una datazione dal III al VI secolo, mentre più di recente Ian Moyer ha sostenuto, con argomenti convincenti basati sugli studi dei dati astronomici presenti nel testo, che la datazione più probabile è quella che va dal 75 al 175 d.C.

Le tre versioni latine - non corrispondenti perfettamente con il testo greco e, in alcuni casi, in aperta contraddizione ad esso - sono databili non prima del XIII secolo e derivano tutte dalla prima recensione.

Di queste, le prime due hanno un originale comune, mentre la terza, pubblicata in una raccolta di testi di medicina a Parigi nel 1528, sembra derivare da un diverso testo greco.

Oltre alla elencazione delle erbe e delle loro virtù dipendenti dai segni zodiacali e dai pianeti, l'opera fornisce indicazioni precise sui tempi e i luoghi in cui vanno raccolte e sull'utilizzo degli estratti per confezionare profumi, medicinali, pillole, infusi.

The Liber de virtutibus herbarum consists of a treatise about zodiacal signs and the seven planets, connected to medical plants, described by Jonathan Smith as "one of the most precious texts for an understanding of the religious life of Late Antiquity".

The original Greek text has two recensions: in the former (preserved in a manuscript copied by Kostantinos Laskaris in 1474), the physician Thessalus receives a revelation of the god Asclepius, after a period of hard ascetism; the latter is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, who reveals himself to Asclepius.

The attribution to Thessalos - the famous Greek physician, who lived under the reign of Nero - was estabilished by Franz Cumont, on the basis of a comparison between the Greek manuscript of Madrid (Codex Martitensis Bibl. nat. 4631, ff. 75r-79v) and that one of Montpellier, but this dating has been refuted at various times.

David Pingree suggested a dating between th 3th and 6th centuries, but recently Ian Moyer (by persuasive arguments based on the studies of astronomical data in the text) claimed that it is more probable between 75 and 175 C.E.

The three Latin versions - that do not correspond exactly to the Greek text and, sometimes, clearly in contradiction to it - date as early as to the 13th century, and they all derive from the first recension; of them, the first two have a sharing original text, whilst the third - published in a collection of medical texts at Paris in 1528 - seems to come from a different Greek text.

Besides a listing of herbs and their powers depending on zodiacal signs and planets, the work furnishes details about when and where to pick them and also about the uses of their essences in order to carry out perfumes, drugs, pills and infusions.
