Esiste una leggenda che narra la storia di Ermete come colui che per primo incise un discorso sapienziale con la punta di un diamante su una tavola di smeraldo.

Si dice che questa tavola sia stata ritrovata da Alessandro Magno o, forse, da Apollonio di Tiana o, ancora, da Sara, moglie di Abramo.

Secondo un altro racconto Balinus, nome arabo di Apollonio di Tiana, scoprì Ermete, il quale possedeva una tavola di smeraldo e il testo sui segreti della creatio.

In realtà la Tabula Smaragdina è stata scritta in arabo nel secolo VI e rappresenta probabilmente la traduzione di un originale greco, ormai perduto.

La trasposizione latina del testo ad opera di Ugo di Santalla risale alla prima metà del secolo XII.

Due differenti versioni della Tabula sono circolate nel Secretum secretorum, falsamente attribuito ad Aristotele, e nel Liber hermetis de alchimia.

Sono famosi i commentari di Ruggero Bacone, Ortolano e Michael Maier a questo trattato, che ha ispirato l'iconografia alchemica rinascimentale.

There is a legend according to which Hermes carved a text of wisdom with the tip of a diamond on an emerald tablet.

It is said that this tablet had been found by Alexander the Great, or, perhaps, by Apollonius of Tyana, or even Sarah, Abraham's wife.

According to another tale Balinus, the Arabic name of Apollonius of Tyana, discovered Hermes, who had an emerald tablet and the text on the secrets of creatio.

Actually, the Tabula Smaragdina was written in Arabic in the sixth century and is probably the translation of a Greek original treatise, now lost.

The Latin transposition compiled by Hugh of Santalla dates from the first half of the twelfth century.

Two different versions of the Tabula have circulated in the Secretum secretorum, falsely attributed to Aristotle, and in the Liber Hermetis alchimia.

The commentaries of Roger Bacon, Michael Maier and Ortolano to this treatise are famous, since it has inspired Renaissance alchemical iconography.
