Liber institutionum activarum

Il Liber institutionum activarum è la traduzione latina, compilata in Spagna nel secolo XIII, di un apocrifo arabo, il Kitab al-nawamisredatto forse da Abu Zayd Hunayn.

Noto anche con i titoli Liber de ordinationibus, Liber Tegimenti (o Regimenti), Liber vaccae, il trattato riporta numerose ricette e pratiche alchemiche, integrando Picatrix.

Il sottotitolo Aneguemis deriva dalla traslitterazione della parola araba nawamis o, più probabilmente, di quella siriaca namusa. I due termini designano rispettivamente "leggi" e "segreti".

Alcuni suppongono che il testo sia la versione araba di un originale siriaco intitolato Liber secretorum, opera di Thabit ibn Qurra della cerchia ermetica dei Sabei di Harran. Questa ipotesi potrebbe essere valida se si tiene conto del fatto che il lemma tegumentum, spesso utilizzato dall'autore, significa "rivestimento dei segreti".

Tuttavia, è l'attribuzione a Platone e a Galeno che ha garantito un'ampia circolazione del Liber institutionum activarum in epoca medievale e rinascimentale.

Il trattato, diviso in due sezioni, presenta experimenta, suffumigi, azioni per produrre mirabilia, sfruttando le virtù naturali delle sostanze, e ricette connesse alla magia organica.

The Liber institutionum activarum is the Latin translation, compiled in Spain in the thirteenth century, of an Arabic apocryphal Kitab al-nawamis drawn up perhaps by Abu Zayd Hunayn.

Also known under the titles Liber de ordinationibus, Liber Tegimenti (or Regimenti), Liber vaccae, the treatise contains several recipes and alchemical practices, integrating Picatrix.

The subtitle Aneguemis comes from the transliteration of the Arabic word nawamis or, more probably, the Syriac namusa. The two terms mean, respectively, "laws" and "secrets".

Some scholars suppose that the text is the Arabic version of a Syriac original entitled Liber secretorum, written by Thabit ibn Qurra, member of the hermetic circle of the Harran's Sabians. This hypothesis could be valid if we consider that the word tegumentum, often used by the author, means "the lining of secrets".

However, the attribution to Plato and Galen has ensured a wide circulation of the Liber institutionum activarum in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Divided into two sections, the treatise presents experimenta, fumigations, actions to produce mirabilia, exploiting the virtues of natural substances, and recipes related to organic magic.
