The original Arabic text, entitled Ghayat al-hakim, was written in Spain in 1047-1051 and translated into Castilian in 1256, at the court of Alfonso X el Sabio.
Known as Picatrix and stored in twenty manuscripts, the Latin transposition "The aim of the wise man" comes from this lost version.
In the fourteenth and fifteenth century, the thinker Ibn Khaldun attributes the treatise to Maslama al-Majriti, but from the textual indications the author seems to be Picatrix.
According to Corbin, this epithet is a corruption of the Latin name of Greek Hippocrates, namely, Hippocrates or Harpocration, transmitted from Arabic Buqratis.
Consisting of four books, "The aim of the wise man" presents a triadic structure: a prologue, a practical-operative section and an epilogue.
The text describes the necromancy, namely, the scientia de rebus absconditis, whose subject are not the demons, but the secreta for making talismans.
In these artificial objects, the philosopher, magician and wise man, must introduce the spiritus. Therefore, it is essential that he knows physics, metaphysics, the arts of the trivium and the quadrivium.
The nigromantia, consisting of three parts (the scientia spirituum, astrology, magic), includes theoretical and practical sections, followed by prayers.
